Our Story
Good Shooting was built on a simple idea
Competitive shooters deserve to buy from someone who actually competes.
Most places that sell precision ammunition are warehouses. The people filling orders have never stood on a firing line with five shots and a wind gust between them and a title. They cannot tell you which lot performs in cold conditions, which brand suits your discipline, or why one box at the same price point is worth waiting for and another is not.
Cathy and James Severin have spent their lives in this sport. Between them they bring over 90 years of competition experience, eight Open World Championship titles, and a level of product knowledge that comes only from competing at the highest levels for decades.
When they opened Good Shooting in 2007, the goal was to make that expertise available to every competitive shooter who walks through the door or visits the site.
Nineteen years later, that has not changed.
Why choose us
What makes Good Shooting different
Owned and operated by decorated competitive shooters
Cathy Winstead-Severin is an 8-time Open World Champion, 24-time National Champion, and 11-time Canadian National Champion in rifle silhouette. James Severin is a four-time State Champion, USCA All American First Team, and National Sportsman’s Team Challenge Team Champion with over 50 years of competition experience. Their recommendations come from a lifetime of competing, not from a product catalog.
Test Center Vendor
Good Shooting is an approved vendor for both Eley and Lapua Test Centers. Once you find your ammunition at one of those locations, your sale can be run through our business.
Hand-sewn shooting gear, made in Joplin
The Fat Bag shooting rest was co-invented by Cathy and her father, Chris Winstead, a coach who developed Junior Olympic Running Target competitors. Every Fat Bag is still sewn by hand at the shops in Joplin, Missouri or Saco, Montana. No factory, no outsourcing, no shortcuts.
Authorized dealer status
Good Shooting is an authorized dealer for Lapua, Eley, SK, RWS, and Norma. Every product is genuine, properly handled, and backed by the manufacturer. Good Shooting is also the number one SK dealer in the United States.
No sales tax on out-of-state orders
Customers outside Missouri pay no sales tax on their orders, which adds up quickly on precision ammunition purchases.
The People Behind the Products
Meet the Severins
Cathy Winstead-Severin

Cathy is an 8-time Open World Champion and one of the most decorated competitive rifle silhouette shooters in the world. She has spent over 35 years competing at the national and international level and brings that experience to every product recommendation at Good Shooting.
James Severin
Owner
James has been competing for over 50 years across Running Target, Pistol, Shotgun, Sporting Clays, and Sportsman’s Team Challenge. He is a four-time State Champion, USCA All American First Team, and NRA Certified Instructor who currently teaches at Joplin Centerfire.
How the Severin Family Began
A sport that brought
them together
In 2006, Cathy and James both traveled to the Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico to compete in a Sportsman’s Team Challenge Regional. It was legendary rifle shooter Lones Wigger who introduced them. They married the next year and combined their decades of experience into Good Shooting Sales and Service, Inc.
Their daughter Rachel was born in 2010, and she has grown up surrounded by the sport.
Today she is in high school and already an essential part of the business. When you place an order online, there is a good chance Rachel is the one fulfilling it. She also steps in to run the shop whenever Cathy or James is away competing.
The Severins have spent their lives passing the tradition of competitive shooting forward, and that starts at home.

I have refined my own skills and have seen a steady progression in my scores, much in part due to Cathy’s excellent instruction.”
